The South Korean electronics giant LG has recently made the difficult decision to close its mobile business to focus on other businesses that will provide new experiences and value for the consumers.
LG had made many innovations including ultra-wide angle cameras, rising to third largest smartphone maker in 2013.
LG has lost ground in smartphones as the global market has become more saturated. It has also faced pressure from cheaper Chinese competitors in the low-to-mid end segment. But it had remained the third-largest smartphone maker in North America and the fifth-largest player in Latin America by market share. While Samsung and Apple are the two biggest players in the smartphone market, LG has suffered from its own hardware and software issues. Last year it shipped 23 million phones, which compares with 256 million for Samsung, according to research firm counterpoint.
"LG's strategic decision to exit the incredibly competitive mobile phone sector will enable the company to focus resources in growth areas such as electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics and artificial intelligence," it said in a statement.
However, it was confirmed officially that the mobile products will continue to be available while supplies last. Although this is vary from country to country.
How long will LG mobile products be available for purchase?
The amount that LG's vendors currently have in stock will be available for purchase. It was officially confirmed that they will provide after-sales services to customers and will continue to offer OS and software upgrades in accordance with relevant regulations.
Until when will repair parts be available? Will consumers still be able to buy mobile accessories?
As LG officially confirmed that they are preparing service parts to prevent customer inconvenience. Users can purchase LG mobile phone accessories (battery, charger, power cable, headsets, etc.) through existing purchase channels according to the life span of existing products. For other 3rd party accessories (case, protective film, etc.), however, supply may be limited based on supplier’s inventory situation.
Will OS upgrades continue to be provided?
OS upgrades will be offered for selected models. The Android 11 OS upgrade is currently in progress for selected models, and the Android 12 OS upgrade will be rolled out based on the same criteria and process. However, please understand that OS upgrade plans are subject to change due to Google’s OS distribution schedule or other factors such as product performance and stability.
Will LG applications and services be continuously available?
Select applications and services will no longer be supported when mobile business operations end.

However, for the convenience for the customers, most applications and services will be continuously available and updated in line with current policies even after the closing down of the LG mobile business. Any changes to applications and service availability as well as relevant information will be announced in advance.
